We Deserve Gay Superheros

I and other gays deserved gay superheroes while growing up. Lack of gay representation in superhero movies makes you think and question if we can ever be the gay hero of our own lives and not just be a sidekick to some gorgeous couple in a rom-com (which is widely represented)

A typical superhero movie, back in the ‘90s, would comprise of a well built male protagonist fighting the well-built antagonist and having a love affair with some gorgeous chick round the corner. Wonder woman/woman-centric and BIPOC representation in superhero fiction is still very recent and counted few, let alone an LGBTQ+ representation, protecting and saving straight communities from an impending apocalypse.

Gay theories in the superhero world are also fairly new (some comics had it in the past too though, can't deny) and even gay porn has a superhero fiction these days, that is replete with all the sexual superhero fantasies (Imagine Batman and Robin Getting cozy).

I would be lying if I say I haven't imagined having an affair with Captain America, or falling in love with big guns Hercules or going on a ride with Alladin (on his flying carpet of course).

Some gay theories in cartoons have pointed out how Winnie the pooh is all the gay representation we need with no body image issues and proudly sporting a crop top while doing all the nice cute things! I celebrated it.

Imagine a similar plot in superhero fiction would have reaffirmed so many gays around the world to see themselves as the quintessential superhero characters without having to feel left out based on one's sexuality.

There is the indeed better representation and awareness now and probably it's also the beginning of having a gay captain America plot onboard. (I heard it's happening)

On any day, I think gays have a higher chance at being the superhero. Most of them are amazingly talented, can multitask, are more sensitive than their cis counterparts, are good at fashion, could probably do makeup and whatnot.

(I don't know of any scientific study that says it but it's purely based on my observation of several hundred gays I’ve met/observed around me/the world).

Additionally, they have a recurring bad guy called homophobia to fight on a frequent basis and that itself should qualify as a superhero power

The world cares about diversity now more than ever before and it's not a distant dream when we may have more gay superheroes fighting the bad guys on screen and romancing the same gender without the need to hide it from the world.

But we also can't ignore the sad reality that being gay is still criminalized in some parts of the world (includes the death penalty too) and the homophobic sections of society will still not be accepting of this idea.

While we are missing the superhero representation on the screens, gays are the superheroes in real life and no matter what, they should continue celebrating this.
